What not to say to someone grieving

25 Nov 2024 | 1 min read time

It’s important to be mindful of what not to say. Words, however well-intentioned, can sometimes be hurtful rather than helpful.

In some cases, the bereaved may not want to talk much at all, and it’s important to consider this, in these cases simply being present for the person is enough. This section helps you avoid common mistakes and will ensure your words provide comfort:

• “They’re in a better place now.”
• “I know how you feel.”
• “At least they lived a long life.”

Offering comfort through actions

Actions can often speak louder than words. Offering practical help can relieve the burden on those who are mourning for the days, weeks, and months after their loss. Here are some ways to extend your support through actions:

• “I’ve brought some meals for the next few days.”
• “I’ll help you handle the arrangements if you need support.”
• “Let’s go for a walk whenever you feel up to it.”

Continuing support for someone who is grieving

Grief is a journey that doesn’t have a set endpoint. Continued support can be a lifeline in the weeks and months following loss. Here’s some suggestions on how to provide comfort in times after the funeral:

• “Just wanted to let you know I’m thinking of you.”
• “How are you doing today? No need to reply, just letting you know I’m here.”

Make a difference

It’s challenging to find the perfect words when someone dies, but remaining silent can make the person in mourning feel even more isolated. Reaching out, even if you’re unsure of what to say, can help to show that they aren’t alone in their grief.

By showing empathy, actively listening, and offering your support, you become a comforting presence during a dark and emotional time in their life. This connection can lighten the emotional burden, reminding them that they are supported and loved.
